Acne Acne - Is Diet Linked to Acne?

Common folk-wisdom is that acne is strongly linked to diet, and that eating certain foods can exacerbate acne symptoms, trigger acne eruptions, or even cause acne (particularly among teenagers). However, at time of writing, there is no high-quality evidence for a definitive link between diet and acne (which is not to say that there is definitely no link).
  • Glycemic load is perhaps the aspect of diet for which there is the strongest evidence of a link to acne. While different studies have found different degrees of affect on acne severity by high glycemic-load diets, it is also true that multiple trials have found that lower glycemic loads can be effective in reducing acne.

  • There is some observational evidence suggesting that dairy milk consumption is associated with higher incidence and severity of acne.

  • It has been suggested that chocolate may be associated with acne, but, at the time of writing, there is no good evidence that this is the case. It should be noted, that many food products that contain chocolate also contain sugar (which has a high glycemic load), and often also contain dairy.

  • It has also been suggested that salt may be associated with acne, but, atht the of writing, there is no good evidence that this is the case.

  • It may be that excessive doses of vitamin B12 (doses in excess of the daily recommended intake) may exacerbate an existing acne condition, or trigger acne-like skin outbreaks ("acneiform eruptions").

  • It may be that there is a relationship between acne and the body's insulin metabolism - and there could be a link between acne and obesity.
